During the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, Capcom put out some really great licensed games, particularly Disney games. DuckTales is a prime example. Released in 1990 on the NES, DuckTales has become an icon of sorts; a symbol from a time when a licensed game wasn’t necessarily mediocre, or worse, outright trash. As kids, we could play our branded games without fear!
DuckTales is a great non-linear action/platformer. As Scrooge McDuck, you’re off across the globe (and the moon) in search of rare treasures, armed with only your trusty cane. The cartoon’s ensemble cast of friends of villains make appearances to either help or hinder you.
Because members of the Mega Man development team also worked on DuckTales, the games share similar gameplay qualities, as well as colorful graphics and fantastic music. DuckTales is a wonderful classic on the NES, and an absolute must-own.
This is my first in a series of reviews for games based on cartoons from The Disney Afternoon, a programming block in the US in the 1990s.
