No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle Review (Wii)

I am having a love affair with the No More Heroes series on the Nintendo Wii. The first was a flawed, but fun and strange adventure, and the second dishes up more carnage with ranked assassin Travis Touchdown, but polishes the game’s mechanics and focuses more on what works and less on what doesn’t. I sincerely hope Wii owners are treated to a third in this excellent, often overlooked series.

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle features even more mayhem and blood and flamboyant style. Deep down, Desperate Struggle is really a brawler with various moves at your disposal, including beam katana attacks, physical attacks, wrestling stunts, powered-up special moves, finishers, as well as blocking and dodging. As you progress, you’ll be given the opportunity to purchase new weapons and duds, upgrade your strength and health and learn new moves. There’s some considerable depth here, especially for a beat’em up. Also, bookending the missions are several mini-games, many of which are styled after old school NES games. While the killing can get a bit repetitive, there’s surely plenty of content here to keep players occupied.

Desperate Struggle does away with the previous game’s sandbox style open city and repeatable assassin missions. The open city of Santa Destroy never felt fully baked to me in the first No More Heroes, so I’m not mourning its loss. The repeatable assassin missions are certainly something I would have liked to see in Desperate Struggle, but there’s still plenty of action to go around, including challenger missions and an unlockable mode when the game is finished.

This is one Wii owners should NOT miss. Action and style in a package all its own, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is a must own!
